Definition
An officially bounded region of the sky; historically, also a recognized star pattern.
Why it matters
Modern astronomy divides the sky into 88 officially recognized constellations. Zodiac constellations lie along the region crossed by the Sun’s apparent path through the sky.
Example
Virgo is both the name of an astronomical constellation and the name of an astrological zodiac sign, but the constellation boundaries and the 30° astrological sign are not the same thing.
Common confusion
A zodiac constellation is not identical to a zodiac sign. Constellations have unequal sizes, while most astrological zodiac systems divide the zodiac into twelve equal 30° signs.
