Scientific and historical perspective
Empedocles’ four roots belonged to ancient natural philosophy, not to modern chemistry. Modern chemical elements are defined by atomic number. Air is a mixture of gases, water is a compound, earth is a broad material category and fire is a process of combustion rather than a substance.
