The 12 Houses in Astrology
Houses divide a birth chart into twelve areas of life. In a simple reading, the planet describes what is active, the sign describes how it is expressed, and the house describes where that symbolism is interpreted.

Houses are not zodiac signs
Both systems use twelve divisions, which makes them easy to confuse. A sign is a 30° sector of the zodiac. A house is a sector of a particular chart. The first house is therefore not automatically “Aries,” the second house is not automatically “Taurus,” and so on.
Why birth time matters
The house framework is oriented to the local horizon and meridian. A different birth time changes that orientation and can move planets from one house to another. If a birth time is unknown, sign placements may still be useful, but house placements and the Ascendant can become uncertain.
What is a house cusp?
A cusp is the boundary where one house begins. The Ascendant marks the beginning of the first house in many commonly used systems. Other house cusps are calculated from the chosen house system.
Why different charts can show different house boundaries
Astrologers use several house systems. Placidus, Whole Sign, Equal House and others divide the chart differently. A planet near a boundary may therefore appear in different houses depending on the system. That is a system difference, not necessarily a calculation error.
How to read a planet in a house
- Identify the planet: what function or theme does it symbolize?
- Identify the sign: how is that planet traditionally interpreted?
- Identify the house: in what area of life is the symbolism placed?
- Then check aspects and the rest of the chart before drawing a conclusion.
Example
If Mars appears in the 10th house, an astrologer might interpret Mars themes such as drive, competition or assertion through public life, career or reputation. The sign containing Mars and its aspects would change the interpretation.
