Zodiac compatibility: best and worst matches

Pick two Sun signs to read how traditional astrology sees the pair. Every sign has three matches the tradition reads as easiest and three it reads as hardest, and each of those 48 pairs has its own page.

Pick two signs

Choose two signs and the page for that pair opens. If the pair has no page, you get the reason and links to both sign guides. The full list of pairs is further down if you prefer to browse.

How the matches are chosen

The method is the old one, with nothing added. Count the signs between two Sun signs and you know the relationship. Four signs apart is a trine, and the two share an element. Two apart is a sextile, which joins fire with air or earth with water, elements tradition counts as friendly. Three apart is a square: the same modality with elements that pull against each other. Five apart is a quincunx, where the signs share no element, modality or polarity, and older astrology says they do not see each other.

Each sign's best three are its two trines plus the sextile sign that sits in its 11th place, two signs back, because the 11th is the traditional place of friends. Its worst three are its two squares plus the quincunx sign in its 6th place, five signs on, which older astrology calls the place of bad fortune. Trines and squares work both ways. The sextile and quincunx picks are one-sided, and each page says who lists whom.

There are no scores or percentages here. These pages describe a tradition, not a forecast for any real couple, and a full birth chart says far more than two Sun signs.

Quincunxes: nothing shared

Pairs without a page

Opposite signs sit six apart. They share a modality, and their elements are a pairing tradition counts as compatible, so the tradition reads an opposition as strong attraction with built-in tension. It is neither a best nor a worst match, so there is no pair page.

Next-door signs sit one apart, a semi-sextile. They share no element or modality, and older astrology says neighbouring signs do not see each other, so the pairing reads as mild and a little awkward.

Two people with the same Sun sign share the element, the modality and the ruler. Tradition reads that as easy understanding with the same blind spots twice over. Read that sign's guide from the list of all 12 signs.
