Definition
The plane of Earth’s orbit and the Sun’s apparent annual path on the celestial sphere.
Why it matters
The ecliptic is the basic astronomical reference behind the zodiac. The Sun appears to move along it over the course of a year, and the Moon and planets stay relatively close to it in the sky.
Example
When astronomers give an object an ecliptic longitude, they are measuring its position along this reference circle.
