Definition
Apparent backward motion against the background sky; in astrology, also a condition given symbolic interpretation.
Why it matters
Retrograde motion is an apparent reversal caused by the changing positions of Earth and another body in their orbits. Astrology also gives retrograde periods symbolic interpretations.
Example
Mars can appear to move westward against the background stars for a period even though it has not actually reversed its orbit around the Sun.
Common confusion
A retrograde planet does not physically move backward in its orbit. “Retrograde” describes how its motion appears from the observer’s point of view.
