Definition
The zodiac degree rising on the eastern horizon at a specific time and place.
Why it matters
The Ascendant changes through the day and depends on both birth time and location. In astrology, it is used as the starting point for the houses and is often called the rising sign.
Example
Someone born shortly after sunrise may have an Ascendant close to their Sun sign, while a person born later the same day can have a very different rising sign.
Common confusion
The Ascendant is not the same thing as the Sun sign. The Sun sign depends mainly on date; the Ascendant depends on the exact time and place used for the chart.
