Why Birth Time and Location Matter in Astrology
What changes quickly
The ascendant moves through the zodiac over the course of a day, averaging roughly one sign every two hours. House cusps also shift continuously.
What changes more slowly
The Moon moves about 13 degrees per day, so a time difference can matter near a sign boundary. Most planets move much more slowly and usually remain in the same sign over several hours.
Location changes the local sky
Two people born at the same moment in different places share the same planetary longitudes but have different horizons and meridians. Their ascendants and houses can therefore differ.
What to do with an unknown time
Use a noon chart only as a provisional display for planetary signs, and do not make precise claims about the ascendant or houses. Some astrologers use chart rectification, but it is interpretive and cannot guarantee recovery of an unknown time.
Where to find a birth time
Possible records include a birth certificate, hospital record, baby book, family announcement or a relative’s memory. Record whether the time is exact, rounded or approximate.
