How to Read a Birth Chart Step by Step

Step 1: confirm the data

Check the date, exact local time, location and time-zone handling. A chart is only as precise as its input data.

Step 2: identify the rising sign and chart ruler

The ascendant sets the orientation of the houses. The planet ruling the rising sign is often called the chart ruler and provides a useful organizing thread.

Step 3: read the Sun and Moon

Start with the Sun’s sign and house, then the Moon’s sign and house. Note any close major aspects to each luminary.

Step 4: group the personal planets

Review Mercury, Venus and Mars. These placements describe communication, values and relating, and assertion within astrological interpretation.

Step 5: look for patterns

Count repeated elements and modalities, note planets clustered in one area, and identify empty or emphasized houses. Empty houses are not “missing”; they simply contain no natal planets.

Step 6: add major aspects

Prioritize the closest conjunctions, oppositions, squares, trines and sextiles. Avoid trying to interpret every minor aspect at once.

Step 7: synthesize rather than list

A useful interpretation explains how themes work together. It does not read like twelve disconnected sign descriptions.
