What an orb is
An orb is the allowed distance from an exact angle. A conjunction at 2° is closer than one at 8°. Astrological schools use different orb limits, often giving wider orbs to the Sun and Moon.
Hard and soft aspects
Squares and oppositions are often called challenging or hard aspects; trines and sextiles are called harmonious or soft. This language is a shorthand, not a verdict. Easy patterns can become passive, while tension can motivate development.
Applying and separating
An applying aspect is moving toward exactness; a separating aspect is moving away. Traditional astrologers often consider applying aspects stronger or more active.
Do not count aspects without context
The planets involved, their signs, houses, condition and the chart’s overall pattern all affect interpretation. A single square or trine should not be treated as a diagnosis.
